Cybersecurity benchmarks

Distinguish CTF solving, vulnerability reproduction, exploit capability and secure coding results.

Cybersecurity benchmarks evaluate security-related tasks, not one universal security skill. A model may recognize a vulnerability, produce a reproducer, solve a sandbox challenge or write code without a known weakness. Cybench uses security challenges; CyberGym tests vulnerability reproduction in software; secure-coding evaluations examine a different outcome again. Select the task and success condition before interpreting any ordering of models.

What these benchmarks test

  • Challenge solving measures progress toward an explicitly defined objective in a controlled environment.
  • Vulnerability reproduction tests whether an artifact triggers the targeted flaw under the verifier's rules.
  • Secure coding and defensive tasks ask whether a system prevents, detects or repairs specified weaknesses.

How to read the results

  • Check what information is provided: source code, a vulnerability description, hints, credentials or an existing foothold.
  • Match tool access, time limits and feedback. Guided and unguided runs are separate comparisons.
  • Read what success proves: a crash, a validated reproducer and control of a target are different outcomes.

What to watch for

  • A specialized target or vulnerability family cannot establish performance across all security work.
  • Offensive capability, refusal behavior and defensive effectiveness should be reported separately.
