Finance benchmarks

Understand financial document questions, numerical reasoning and evidence retrieval without confusing them with investment performance.

Finance benchmarks test tasks involving financial language, documents or workflows. A question about a company's report may require finding the correct period, reading a table and combining figures with a stated formula. FinQA emphasizes numerical reasoning over financial reports; FinanceBench examines evidence-based financial questions. These are useful ways to inspect analytical behavior, but they do not measure future investment returns.

What these benchmarks test

  • Document understanding connects a question to the correct company, reporting period and evidence.
  • Numerical reasoning tests operations over quantities, including scale, signs and units.
  • Retrieval-augmented tasks also depend on which documents and passages the system supplies to the model.

How to read the results

  • Establish whether relevant evidence is provided, must be retrieved, or is unavailable to the system.
  • Check whether evaluation scores the answer, the calculation, supporting citations, or all three.
  • Separate open-ended analysis from questions with a single reference answer; inspect tolerances and accepted units.

What to watch for

  • A correct historical calculation does not demonstrate forecasting, investment suitability or regulatory compliance.
  • Document age and coverage matter. A benchmark may not represent changed reporting practices or a specific market.
